What is LEAVE A LEGACYTM?
LEAVE A LEGACYTM is a national public awareness program designed to educate and encourage people to leave a gift through their Will or any other gift planning instrument to a charity or not-for-profit organization of their choice. LEAVE A LEGACYTM does not solicit gifts for any particular organization. LEAVE A LEGACYTM is a donor-oriented education campaign to raise awareness of the importance of including a charitable gift in the estate planning process.
The Golden Horseshoe LEAVE A LEGACYTM Program is a region-wide program (Hamilton, Burlington, Brant and Niagara areas) that aims to build local awareness of the benefits of making planned gifts that better those in our local community. The local program also aids in building partnerships between donors, charities and not-for-profit organizations and gift planning professionals such as estate planners, financial advisors, insurance professionals, accountants and lawyers.
A program of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP-ACPDPTM), LEAVE A LEGACYTM is a collaborative effort of donors, charities, not-for-profits and professional advisors. The LEAVE A LEGACYTM program goal is to raise awareness of the importance of thoughtful, well-planned, tax-preferred gifts and their impact on the quality of life for everyone in our communities.
Why LEAVE A LEGACYTM?
To Enrich People's Lives
Every day, people are helped and lives are enriched by the work of registered charities and foundations, and other not-forprofit organizations in our communities. Meals for isolated seniors, summer jobs for disadvantaged high school students, funding for mental health or cancer research or a live performance by a local arts organization are just some of the ways not-for-profit organizations improve our lives. Canadians give for many different reasons: for some it is a way to ensure their memory lives on, for many it's a way to ensure that their favourite charity is able to continue its important work, while for others it represents a way to facilitate the tax implications that come with the transfer of one’s estate to surviving relatives.
To Provide Support
Financial assistance is essential to support and sustain charitable work. Many people generously share their money, time and energy with local not-for-profit organizations. And many people are unaware that by leaving a gift in their Will or estate plan to the charitable groups of their choice, they can continue to help people in need or promote a favourite cause. We wish more funding were available for medical research, for homeless shelters, or a treasured arts or music program.
