For a Healthy Future
Allan Kelly
(June 1, 1924 - March 2, 2006)
Three years before his death, Allan Kelly, donor and dear friend of his local hospital started giving thought to his estate plans. Allan wanted to make a personal investment for the future of the hospital, a place that was always there for him when he needed it. As a patient, he had become very close with the staff of the Cancer Clinic. He met with his financial advisor to work on setting up a gift for the hospital.
His advisor suggested the best way to make a substantial gift – while keeping his family’s needs in mind – would be to take out a life insurance policy with the hospital as beneficiary. Allan could pay annual premiums which would yield a much larger gift than he could give directly from his assets. The charitable tax receipt would then offset taxes owing on the estate upon his death.
“My dad was one of those quietly effective people in the world. He was modest, understated, a deep and creative thinker…a kindhearted, loving soul at his core.”
Dawn Kelly
Following Allan’s death, Dawn Kelly was eager to discuss her dad’s gift with hospital staff who got to know him best. They helped make suggestions about the designation of his life insurance policy. As he would have wished, his bequest is designated for use in the Cancer Clinic. Dawn suggested that she and her family would also like to contribute to this fund annually in Allan’s memory.
Allan Kelly’s gift to the hospital is a testament to who he was. With the establishment of the Allan Kelly Endowment Fund, perpetual funding is available for the Cancer Clinic to be used at the discretion of its physicians and manager. Allan did not request public recognition or thanks. He did chat on the phone with Foundation staff, on many occasions, but did not feel the need to attend donor events or have personal visits.
We are grateful to Allan’s family for giving permission for this article so that others can learn about the impact of gift planning For A Healthy Future.
